North Island Optimist Championships - Napier 26-28 November 2018

With 23 sailors making the trip to Napier for the regatta we had a great start to the season. We had 6 sailors where it was their first ranking regatta so a big learning experience.
The forecast was mixed ahead of the regatta and it didn't disappoint with some light and very shifty sailing occurring across the 3 days of racing. In one race we even saw a downwind finish!
Day 1 saw 3 races being run in light winds with the Murrays Bay sailors finishing up holding a number of the top spots going into day 2.
Day 2 was frustrating with AP flags being flown and launching delayed. The team made great use of the time to fly drones, sing and dance while Opti Rep Simon photo bombed as many photos as possible. Day 2 only saw 2 races being run with a number of course resets due to shifts as big as 50 degrees causing havoc for the race committee and sailors a like.
Day 3 - Finals day saw more delays with the sea breeze not kicking in until 12:30 at which point sailors had up to 20 knots providing quite a different sailing experience to the light shifty conditions on the previous days.
Overall Murrays Bay sailors sailed very well with 15 sailors making Gold fleet including Jessica Redpath in her first ranking regatta! All sailors learnt a great deal which they will take into future regattas - well done team!
