The Laser is one of the most popular single-handed dinghies in the world. As of 2012, there are more than 200,000 boats worldwide, and around 4,400 in New Zealand. A commonly cited reason for its popularity is that it is robust, simple to rig and sail. The Laser also provides very competitive racing due to the very tight ("one-design") class association controls which eliminate differences in hull, sails and equipment.

Whilst MBSC is predominantly a junior/youth club we welcome sailors of all ages and the Laser accommodates all ages. The  Laser 4.7 (ideal weight 50-55kg) is ideal for adults learning to sail or for lighter weight sailors graduating from Optimist. The Laser Radial (55-72kg) is a natural stepping stone for youth sailors that have out grown the Starling and wish to continue sailing single-handed centreboard dinghies. And the standard (full rig) Laser (75+ kg) is suited to higher sailor weights.

MBSC has a great affinity with the Laser Class having developed several sailors sailing the Laser at the very highest level including current proponents Josh Armit (World Youth Champion), Andy Maloney, Sam Meech (Olympian bronze medalists), Susannah Pyatt, Scott Leith (World Masters Champ).  Plus, of course, the Laser is synonymous with New Zealand's toughest dinghy race, the annual Oki 24 Hour Race run by MBSC at Lake Pupuke.

The regular club coaching sessions take place on Monday nights and it is hoped to run some additional "clinics" prior to nationals in January.   For a small cost non-MBSC sailors are welcome to join in. Sessions are led by our in-house coaches Peter Soosalu with multiple world champion Scott Leith frequently taking the lead plus guest coaches such as Sara Winther running routine and or additional sessions
