Optimist Blue Fleet: Your First Step Beyond Learn to Sail
Welcome to the Optimist Blue Fleet—the starting line for young sailors continuing their journey after completing the Learn to Sail course. Blue Fleet is designed specifically as the next stage, providing a nurturing and supportive environment for new sailors to build solid skills, grow their confidence, and experience fleet sailing for the very first time.

What is the Blue Fleet All About?
Blue Fleet bridges the gap between structured sailing lessons and your first taste of independence on the water. This fleet is all about consolidating what you learned in Learn to Sail: boat handling, sail trimming, and maneuvering. Here, you'll discover what it means to sail alongside other kids, develop good habits, and grow comfortable managing your own boat within a group.
Sessions are relaxed, friendly, and focused on learning. Coaches guide sailors at every step, offering encouragement and individualized feedback so everyone feels supported—no matter their starting point. There’s no pressure to compete; the main aim is to help every sailor become more capable and enjoy their time afloat.

Aims of the Blue Fleet
- Build Foundational Skills: Strengthen the core sailing techniques developed in Learn to Sail—including steering, sail trim, and boat balance.
- Grow Confidence: Gain trust in your abilities by sailing in a variety of conditions and situations, all under the guidance of caring instructors.
- Experience Fleet Sailing: Learn how to sail safely and confidently among other Optimists, navigate around marks, and practice group drills and simple race starts.
- Foster Independence: Begin taking ownership of your boat—rigging, de-rigging, and understanding equipment basics—all with parental support as needed.
- Make Friends and Have Fun: Meet other sailors from across Auckland, share new experiences, and build friendships that make every session enjoyable.
Expectations
For Sailors
As a Blue Fleet sailor, your job is to give things a go, be open to new challenges, and put in your best effort:
- Participate with Enthusiasm: Arrive ready to learn, listen, and enjoy yourself on the water.
- Try New Skills: Practice techniques both familiar and new, knowing it’s okay to make mistakes while you learn.
- Be Respectful and Supportive: Look out for your fellow sailors, encourage others, and always show good sportsmanship.
- Take on Responsibility: Gradually start looking after your own gear and boat setup—with help from parents and coaches.
Expectations for Parents
Families play a vital role in every sailor’s confidence and growth. Here are some ways you can help:
- Celebrate Progress: Recognize effort, attitude, and small wins, not just outcomes.
- Offer Gentle Support: Help your sailor with preparation—for example, rigging the boat, remembering gear, and post-session debriefs.
- Encourage Independence: Nudge your child to take small steps toward responsibility, while always being ready to assist.
- Stay Involved: Join our community by volunteering when you can and connecting with other parents—your enthusiasm enhances the club for everyone.
Blue Fleet is the foundation for a lifetime of sailing, and we’re excited to welcome your family as you take this exciting step
Here, your sailor will become not just a better sailor, but a more confident, independent, and enthusiastic one—ready for whatever comes next on the water and beyond.
